Post-Socialist and Comparative Memory Studies

The Post-Socialist and Comparative Memory Studies (PoSoCoMeS) working group of MSA welcomes proposals for PoSoCoMeS sessions within the Annual MSA conference. The 8th MSA conference will take place in Lima, Peru, from 18-20 July 2024. The main theme of the conference is „Memories in Transit”.

For the MSA conference in Lima, PoSoMeS plans to organise several sessions. Therefore, we encourage all those interested in the PoSoCoMeS working group to submit a paper proposal (name/contact, title, abstract) by 31 December 2023 to the following addresses: Anna Topolska: topolska@umich.edu ; Petra Hudek: petra.hudek25@gmail.com ; Ute Hirsekorn: ute.hirsekorn@nottingham.ac.uk

PoSoCoMeS working group aims to help establish high scholarly standards for post-socialist memory studies across disciplinary boundaries. We also wish to create a global framework for scholarly dialogue about post-socialist memory, with particular attention to comparative and transnational approaches including regions in the Global South and elsewhere that have been influenced by the socialist project.

The thematic areas listed below might be interpreted quite widely. The main objective is to cover as many different historical, geographical, social and cultural aspects as possible. We would like to emphasise that priority will be given to abstracts dealing with post-socialist and comparative memory.
1. Mobility, migration, and refugees
2. Memory, activism, and social justice
3. Transitional Justice and public policies of memory
4. Conflict, violence, and memory
5. Populism, neopopulism, neoconservatism, and negationism
6. Indigenous and afro-descendant peoples and their memories
7. Memories of feminisms and sexual dissidences
8. Memory and the environment
9. Memory and diverse belongings
10. Memoryscapes (digital, places, imagined)
11. Creative approaches to memory and embodiment
12. The coloniality and decolonising of memory
